Firstly Congratulations on moving to your dreamland “South Korea” This will definitely set a journey that will change your life.
First-hand preparation will always go a long way, you will have some peaks and valleys there, but don’t worry it’s safe and lots of fun too.
Here are some details, while living in Korea:
Society
Koreans are modern on the outer side, but traditional deep on the inside. In Seoul life is expeditious, so if you want a free & easy experience, then try moving to the south.
K-pop and K-dramas are not precise representations of what life is like in Korea. It’s becoming more international every year, in spite of its conservative values.
Food (the best part)
Food in Korea is more diverse than just Kimchi or Tteokbokki. And trying new things is a good way of testing your taste buds. Dishes are based on soy sauce, seaweed, dashi, gochujang (red pepper paste), doenjang (soybean paste), and toasted sesame oil.
Also, there are plenty of other international restaurants including Indian, Turkish, Brazilian, Mexican, South African, European, etc. Make sure you try some of these foods too.
Transportation
Transportation is cheap, fast, and convenient. Trains, subways, taxis, and buses all are linked to one transportation card (T-Money) all over the country. With the same card, you can take the train from Busan to Seoul with the same card.
So you don’t worry about not having a car, as everyone takes the bus.
Shopping and Convenience
Korean markets have more overseas goods (local, and international) both. And you know what online shopping is so amazing grocery is delivered on the same day, and affordable clothing options are tons (if you enjoy Korean styles).
Major clothing brands like (H&M, Zara, Nike, Levi’s, Gucci, etc.) but the size will be different.
Korean apps are great they allow you to do things like shopping, banking, messaging, booking a taxi, sending gifts, and many more.
Weather
South Korea has 4 seasons and counting. Spring and Autumn will make you fall in love with Korea, but winter sometimes is harsh, with temperatures dropping below freezing and icy winds. you are going to need lots of warm clothes and in layers like (jackets, coats, sweaters, and scarves, wear darker colors in winter as they absorb more heat. When winter ends everything starts getting lively. Summer lasts from July to August which is the hottest time in Korea
Health and Well-being
Pressure at work to socialize can be intense at work, so don’t be afraid to say “no”.You will require lots of comfort to help you relax in your downtime. Keep an open mind so you can balance your needs.
The quality of air is not great, so keeping an air purifier will do wonders for your well-being.
So always remember “why” for going abroad. For everyone, it’s a different experience. Learning a new language, culture, tradition, food, etc.
